What I Did Last Week.

I've decided to start recording what I've done in the last week, on Mondays, so that I can see what I've achieved, and evaluate it, seeing what I need to do for the upcoming week. So here's what I did last week (not including the hours stressing over my dissertation!).

I did a couple of drawings working from the photographs I took over Christmas, focusing on composition and textures. I also spent some time testing out the stitches on my sewing machine, looking at how they could work against my screen prints, as well as putting together quilt shapes. I tested out a few natural dyes on yarn (so far I have tried coffee, tea, black beans and red cabbage). I've also been testing out designing my own fair-isle knit patterns to create textures (no photos of that as my camera has just decided to give up on me!)
This week I want to experiment further with natural dyes, finish knitting my patches and put together my work ready for the upcoming hand-in!

Natural Dyes.

I have been experimenting with dyeing yarns naturally, which I looked at a little in my second year project, but wish to explore further. I love that the colours created have been taken directly from nature, giving the material a link with the natural world. I need to do a lot more experimenting and researching about mordants, pH and other sciencey stuff!

The top images shows red cabbage being boiled, the second is of yarn soaking in coffee and the rest show the finished yarns, from left to right - black beans, red cabbage, and tea.

Another forest.

Over the Christmas break I visited an area of woodlands close to my home, so that I could take some photos for inspiration. I have many memories of this place, to me it has a kind of strange feeling, peaceful, but slightly creepy, half-remembered stories passed down, warning signs and safe boxes dumped in ditches.

I don't know whether the feel of a place can come across in a photograph?
I'm back at uni now, and working on developing my ideas into products and pieces. I should have some exciting things to share soon!

Temple of Harmony.

The Temple of Harmony is a replica of 1st century BC Temple of Fortuna Virilis, Rome. It was built in 1767, but was restored in the 1990's, after becoming derelict. It is found in the grounds of a large house in Somerset. I love the way it stands isolated, in the middle of nature, it seems so magical, part of another world. Here are some photos that I took of it last week, and I am working on some drawings from these, to use in my stitch and print work.

Woodland walks.

Happy New Year! I spent the Christmas break relaxing, and catching up with uni work. I visited some woodland near home, and took a few photographs to work from, as I was running low on inspiration for my drawings, prints and embroideries. Here are a few photos that I took, I love the colours, and the mysterious feel that forests seem to have.
