Down in Dunedin I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try drawing some people and animals, which is pretty tricky since they move about a lot (I hate to draw from photos). I found some awesome parrots willing to pose for a drawing for about 5 seconds, and I tried drawing some people while watching TV, since I didn't feel brave enough to go stare at actual random people on the streets! And the dog is a handsome but fidgety pup I was looking after while house sitting.

I discovered Rouda and their SS14 collection Positive Negative on Instagram the other day, and fell in love! I love the idea of positive and negative, and the use of black and white. I don't think the longer dresses or skirts would suit me (I'm too short!), but the shadow hands tee and minidress is definitely going on my wishlist! I really love the shadow hands print, it is so fun, I remember tracing round my hand shadows one day at uni, but not knowing how it could ever work as a design, so really glad to see that someone has figured that out! Excited to see more from Rouda!

I spent 2 days in Christchurch on my way back up to Auckland after my trip to Dunedin. For some reason, even though I knew about the 2011 earthquake, I wasn't expecting to see so much evidence of it as there is. It was so strange to walk through empty streets in the middle of the city, the old Starbucks that is now closed down with smashed windows and the sign hanging off the wall. But it is awesome to see how much cool stuff is going on! Instead of the standard high street chains there is the container mall of independent shops and cafes; food trucks have replaced the fast-food places, and there is loads of cool art projects dotted all about the city!

Since being back in Auckland I have been playing around with paints and dyes on a huge roll of paper we have hanging about in the house. I have been testing out techniques and using different materials to create patterns. I'd love to build up a collection of amazing samples that I can refer to whenever I need, but for now I'm playing about on paper, not being 'precious' and just seeing what happens!
"...just the act of repetition itself will bring enlightenment. That's the thing that always stuck out to me - the idea that quantity becomes quality. I always took it to mean if you do anything enough, if you keep putting enough effort in, eventually something will happen, with or without you. You don't have to have faith when you start out, you just have to dedicate yourself to practice as if you have it."
I love this quote (yep, another from Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham) and am trying to remember it as I make a crazy mess and lots of gross patterns that didn't turn out as I hoped, with a few cool outcomes thrown in there!

I took my sketchbook with me to the Botanic Gardens in Dunedin, and spent some time in the amazing cacti house, looking at all the crazy shapes and spikes! I was lucky to plan my trip on a weekday, so it was nice and empty, so more uninterrupted drawing time.

One of my favourite parts of my trip to Dunedin was definitely my visit to the botanic garden! I got some picnic snacks from the supermarket across the road, and spent the day there. I was super lucky with a day of warm weather, and there was so much to see. The aviary was amazing, so many different parrots I had never seen before, including a talking cockatoo! The wintergardens were amazing too, so many cacti. Apparently I enjoy visits to botanic gardens as I also went to one in Wellington and also Christchurch!

I have been in Dunedin for 3 weeks now, and am heading back to Auckland in a few days. It has gone so quickly! Dunedin is a great city though, so close to the beach, and some cool things going on in the city. There are loads of interesting buildings, it actually reminds me a little of America, with the wide streets and mix of apartment buildings.
